In the plane to Asmara

Hey guys! We're in the plane to Asmara, Eritrea and I am so pumped! So far we have stopped at Holland. There, we got to spend a lot of time with the family! Then, we went to Dubai! We arrived at night so we had to sleep! :( Then, we went exploring...teehee! We saw the tallest building in the world, largest mall, a mall with a place to ski, and we went to find sand dunes.

Unfortunately, we had no idea where these dunes were so we just headed far way from the city in hopes that we would find the great, piles of sand. Basically our plan failed. Oh, we found the sand dunes alright! But there were giant ants chasing us for shade and guard dogs barking at us. I am not sure if we were on military property or not. :)

Anyways after we found our piles, we jumped back into the awesome car we rented and followed the really stupid GPS that got us lost 20 times! Anyways it was a long day in Dubai.

When we finally got home (the hotel), Lianda and I dropped into bed for 20 minutes. Lianda had a major headache and would not wake up so Daddy and Salina left us to go watch the FIFA World Cup Final Holland vs. Spain in a restaurant of the hotel. Not wanting to miss the game, Lianda and I got up, ate, took showers and rushed downstairs only missing the first 30 minutes. About the game....well I have a lot to say about that.}:(

Visit to Asmara orphanage

Today was an extremely interesting day it was one of the first days of our time in Eritrea that we've been able to go out and explore Asmara. So on our free day we decided to visit the Asmara orphanage. Ever since we were little kids we would sell our toys at festivals and donate the money to the orphanage so we wanted to experience first-hand what we had been workking for. The second we walked into the grounds of the orphanage we saw kids waving, jumping up and down screaming “visitors” (gasha) in Tigrinia. We entered the room where the orphans from 2-6 playedand immediately all the kids ran to us jumping on us and grabbing our hands.

We had an amazing time taking turns singing to each other they sung “ABC” and “Semira, Semira” while we sung “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” “You Are My Sunshine” and some of our songs. Even though we had tons of fun bonding, talking, and playing with them, the real reason why they were there never left my mind. All the kids looked identical with their heads shaved bald and thinking about the reason why they were all at the orphanage made me want to cry. Once we headed to the nursery, where all the babies were held, it took all my strength to hold back my tears. There were rows of bare cribs and babies within them, one baby was only a week old. After talking to some of the volunteers we learned that the week-old baby boy was found in the trash at 3 days old and another child had lost an ear due to raccoons and animals rummaging through trash. Although the orphanage is doing all they can to help the children there is still a lot that needs to be improved. It was because of this that we have decided to do a benefit concert in Asmara where all the proceeds will go to the orphanage and in the future try to create an EriAm foundation. These abandoned children and babies need help and the only way they can receive it is if we work together and contribute.
We have sung a song called “Stand Up For Love” which to me is the perfect song for these children and children suffering around the world. You can listen to us singing to it on YouTube at <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jRjH2YP7WkA>

July 5/2010 Amsterdam

Its our First day in Holland, Amsterdam where the soccer fever is very high because the Dutch team made it to the semi-finals and are ready to take on Uraguay on Tuesday evening. The streets are decorated orange, the national color of Holland and the radio, TV and everyone you meet talks only about one thing, the soccer game....

Todays a day simply dedicated to visiting family. Were all so excited to be back after 6 years, which was the last time we came here. After traveling to Hawaii last year, i thought i’d never see a place more beautiful than there! I was soo wrong! We walked to the top of a hill today that had a huge circular swing set. When you sit down on any of the swings you get a beautiful view of the whole city! It’s the most gorgeous view I’ve ever seen, its so hard to describe what we saw in words. We’ll post videos/pics as soon as possible.

I know you may think this place is picture perfect but ehh... one problem. I AM TIRED!!! I honestly dont think we’ve had  a bit of sleep for the past 24 hours and  most brain cells are not functioning write now.... We woke up around 7:00am, left Seattle at 12:00pm, stayed awake the entire 9 hour flight and arrived at Holland around 7:00 in the morning. We all were wide awake on the plane watching every movie Delta airlines had available so there was NO sleep. I regret that decision a lot now.

I dont know how were gonna be able to handle all this jetlag. But were having fun, I’m not gonna complain. Were so grateful to be experiencing what we are.

One more problem, we lost a luggage with one of our brand new laptop. I think it is Haben's fault since she was the one carring the luggage and left it at a location we stopped to take a picture. Everyone else thinks it is my fault because the luggage was assigned to me to take care of.... you tell me:-(
